SAP Center at San Jose celebrates 5000th event

SAN JOSE’S PREMIER SPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT VENUE OPENED ON SEPTEMBER 7, 1993 WITH RINGLING BROS. AND BARNUM & BAILEY CIRCUS

SAN JOSE, Calif (September 6, 2024) --  SAP Center at San Jose (@SAPCenter), the premier sports and entertainment venue in San Jose, will celebrate its 5,000th event on Saturday, September 7 when the all-new, reimagined production of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey®  The Greatest Show On Earth®produced by Feld Entertainment, the worldwide leader in live entertainment experiences, returns to San Jose after an eight-year hiatus.  SAP Center first opened its doors exactly 31 years ago to the day when it then hosted Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus, the first event to ever perform at the venue, on September 7, 1993, then known as the San Jose Arena.  

To commemorate the 5,000th event, a photo opportunity featuring San Jose Sharks mascot S.J. Sharkie and representatives from SAP Center and Ringling took place inside SAP Center on Friday, September 6, 2024 at 10 a.m.  Additionally, fans attending the three-day run of the show will notice SAP Center event day staff wearing special pins to celebrate the anniversary.

This iconic production of The Greatest Show On Earth, designed to entertain today’s families, brings together 75 performers from 18 different nationalities, showcasing over 50 exhilarating circus acts in a fast-paced, action-packed two-hour show.  The all-new Ringling blends breathtaking stunts, high-energy performances, and laugh-out-loud moments that keep everyone on the edge of their seats.  Fans can expect to be fully immersed in a 360-degree viewing experience that brings the action to life all around them. The arena floor becomes the ultimate playground, where gravity-defying stunts and thrilling performances unfold right before their eyes.

Since opening in 1993, SAP Center at San Jose has been a gathering place for the community, providing more than thirty glorious years of entertainment for the City of San Jose and its residents. Over the past three decades, SAP Center and the San Jose Sharks (@SanJoseSharks) have served as the key economic and entertainment catalysts to the downtown San Jose that we see today. In more than 30 years, nearly 50 million visitors have passed through its doors. Over that span, the quantity, quality, and variety of events that SAP Center has hosted is astounding. 

As one of the country’s busiest and most successful indoor arena’s, nearly every entertainment performer imaginable has graced the stage in San Jose over the past 30 years: Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, Barbra Streisand, Bruce Springsteen, Taylor Swift, Bob Dylan, Metallica, Vicente Fernandez, Beyonce, Elton John, Billy Joel, Garth Brooks, Jay-Z, The Three Tenors (Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti and Jose Carreras), Madonna, Eric Clapton, Simon & Garfunkel, Coldplay, Lady Gaga, Prince, Drake, Adele, Luis Miguel, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, U2 …. and the list goes on and on.

In the sporting world, those events have included the 2016 Stanley Cup Final, NHL All-Star Games in 1997 and 2019, world-class U.S Gymnastics events (2007, 2012, 2016, and 2023), U.S. Figure Skating Championships (1996, 2012, 2018 and 2023), the NCAA men’s basketball tournament seven times (scheduled again in 2026) and the women’s NCAA Women’s Final Four in 1999, ATP tennis tournaments from 1994- 2013, and league championships with indoor football’s Bay Area Panthers and the San Jose SaberCats, and roller hockey’s San Jose Rhinos – to name a few.
